The floor shows you the subfloor
Every flaw in a finished floor traces back underneath it. LVP telegraphs every high and low spot in a slab or subfloor. Tile cracks along seams that were never fastened tight. Carpet reveals every ridge and hump you thought the pad would hide. So before anything gets installed we fasten down squeaks, flatten what needs flattening, and deal with any transition heights while they are still easy to change.
Our Dearborn Avenue remodel is a good illustration: new pad and carpet in the lower-level bedrooms and den, refinished hardwood on the main floor, tile in the hall, and an epoxy coating on the basement living-room slab. Four rooms, four different right answers, one crew.
Picking the right material per room
Carpet is still the right call in bedrooms and family rooms — warm underfoot in a Montana February and far quieter than any hard surface. Luxury vinyl plank is the workhorse: waterproof, dimensionally stable, handles dogs and kids, and looks convincing now in a way it did not ten years ago. Tile for bathrooms, entries and mudrooms where water and grit live, especially with in-floor heat. Epoxy over a basement or garage slab where you want sealed and seamless — see epoxy floor coatings.
Entries, mudrooms and Montana grit
A Missoula entry takes snowmelt, road sand and gravel eight months a year. That is a specific problem, and it argues for tile or a good LVP at the door with a proper transition, not carpet you will be replacing in four years. Getting the transition heights and the threshold detail right is unglamorous work that makes the difference between a clean line and a trip hazard.

Flooring and finish carpentry are the same conversation. Baseboard has to come off or get scribed, door casings may need undercutting, and stair nosings and transitions have to be right. Because we do both, nobody hands you off halfway and nobody blames the other trade for the gap.

Common questions
Do you move the furniture?
We can, and it belongs in the estimate rather than as a surprise on day one. Tell us up front what needs moving — pianos, gun safes and treadmills are worth mentioning specifically.
Carpet or LVP in a basement?
LVP or epoxy if there is any moisture history in the slab, because carpet on a damp slab holds odor and never really recovers. Carpet is fine in a dry basement bedroom and is noticeably warmer. We check the slab before recommending either.
Can you install flooring I bought myself?
Yes. Have it on site and acclimated before install day, and buy enough — running short mid-job on a discontinued lot is a genuinely bad afternoon. Confirm the product with us first so we can plan the underlayment and transitions.
How flat does my floor need to be?
Flatter than most people expect, especially for LVP and tile, and manufacturers publish a tolerance that voids the warranty if you ignore it. We check it with a straightedge before we quote, so any leveling shows up as a line item instead of a change order.
How long does a flooring job take?
A few rooms of carpet or LVP is typically one to three days. Tile takes longer because of set and grout cure. Whole-house replacement with subfloor repair runs about a week. You get a schedule with the estimate.
